MotoAmerica Superbikes Return This Weekend
America’s fastest road-racing motorcycles make their annual Utah appearance
TOOELE VALLEY, UTAH (July 18, 2018) — The fastest road-racing motorcycles in North America return to Utah Motorsports Campus this weekend, July 20-22, for the MotoAmerica Championship of Utah.
MotoAmerica serves as America’s national championship for road-racing motorcycles, and has been an annual fixture in Utah since the track opened as Miller Motorsports Park in 2006.
“We are excited to welcome back our friends from MotoAmerica,” said Willem Geyer, general manager of UMC. “They never fail to put on a great show for our fans. The speed of the bikes and the athleticism of the riders is just astounding, and we’re looking forward to a great weekend.”
There will be five separate classes of motorcycles competing this weekend in what will be Round 6 of the series’ 10-round 2018 championship. The headline attraction is the Motul Superbike class, with highly-modified 1000cc bikes ridden by many of the world’s best-known competitors. Other classes competing include Supersport, Liqui Moly Junior Cup, Stock 1000 and Twins Cup.
In the Motul Superbike class, defending champ Toni Elias of Spain, riding for Suzuki, is shooting for a second consecutive title. The former MotoGP pilot and 2010 Moto2 champion is currently second in the championship, chasing 2016 series champ Cameron Beaubier of Yamaha.
Fans are encouraged to cheer on our local team, Rickdiculous Racing, which is based here at UMC and fields Yamahas in the Supersport class for Hayden Gillim (No. 69, currently second in points) and Jason Aguilar (No. 96) as well as for Gauge Rees (No. 46) of Roy, Utah, in the Liqui Moly Junior Cup class. Also competing will be Justin Delong, Oleg Pianykh and Sherwick Min, who are regular competitors in the Utah Sport Bike Association’s Law Tigers Masters of the Mountains amateur superbike racing series that is based at UMC.
Family-friendly activities will include rider autographs, karting, drift rides and a Kids Zone, and there will be a variety of food and other vendors onsite as well.
Friday’s schedule includes practice and qualifying sessions, and admission will be free for everyone. Races will take place on Saturday and Sunday, with the Motul Superbike, Supersport and Liqui Moly Junior Cup classes having two races each, while there will be one race for the Twins Cup and Stock 1000 classes. Tickets for Saturday and Sunday are available either on the track’s website or at the Box Office. There are VIP and camping options available. In addition, the Rodizio Grill restaurant onsite at UMC will be open for dinner on Friday and Saturday nights.
Utah Motorsports Campus is managing the facility formerly known as Miller Motorsports Park on behalf of Tooele County while the procedures to sell the facility take place.
Mitime Utah Investment, LLC, the parent company of Utah Motorsports Campus, has agreed with the Tooele County Board of Commissioners to an extension of the existing facility management agreement through December 31, 2018.
